When Music Becomes Art: Our Adventure with ALEC’s Vinyl Collection

Quando la musica diventa arte: la nostra avventura con i vinili di ALEC

Second Year Middle School | Interdisciplinary Project: Music & Art

There is something magical about holding a vinyl record: the weight, the cover, the whisper of the needle meeting the groove. An experience that the students of the second-year middle school classes had the chance to discover firsthand, thanks to a wonderful project that brought us to meet the association ALEC.

A Special Collection

ALEC manages a precious vinyl record collection donated by Gianfranco Alessandria — a musical and cultural heritage that the association preserves and promotes with great passion. During the first visit, the students had the opportunity to discover how a vinyl record truly works — from the physics of sound to the mechanics of the turntable — and to browse through some of the most iconic album covers in music history. Because an album cover is not just an image: it is an artistic manifesto, an invitation to listen, and sometimes a work of art in its own right.

The Challenge: Reimagining a Classic

Back at school, the students were given a creative challenge: to create their own version of a famous album cover, reinterpreting it with the tools and sensibility of a young artist. The work was developed together with the Art teacher, who guided the group through their graphic and technical choices.

The Grand Finale: Presentations and Awards

About two months later, we met again with ALEC for the most anticipated moment: the presentation of the works. One by one, the students presented their cover, explaining their choice, their creative motivations, and the techniques they used. The result was remarkable: a small gallery of original works, each with its own distinctive voice.
To celebrate everyone’s dedication and creativity, we organised an internal competition, with three special awards:

🥇 Overall 1st Prize — won by Dafne Maria Dotta
🌟 Best Original Idea — won by John Moglia Louis Elton
🎨 Best Graphic Technique and Execution — won by Gaia Crivellari

A big round of applause to them, and to all the participants who poured their heart and creativity into this project!

An Experience to Remember

This journey showed how art and music can engage in an extraordinary dialogue, and how an “old-fashioned” object like the vinyl record can still speak to today’s young people. We would like to thank the ALEC association, Enzo Patri, Giancarmine Apicella, and Silvio Accigliari for the generosity and enthusiasm with which they welcomed us and accompanied us throughout this adventure.
We hope it won’t be the last!
